Steps in Finding your Ikigai

Happy Mother's Day! What a great day to reflect and enjoy family for those celebrating. As a I reflect about being a mother, it is part of the reason why I want to leave a lasting legacy: for my children for years to come even when I am no longer around.

We are truly getting into the heart of my upcoming book The LOTUS Within. We discussed ikigai on my last post Let us first understand: The concept of ikigai. Now that you know what ikigai is and its four components, use your responses from the last blog to help you with the steps. Continue writing on your journal and take your time.

Step #1 - Identify your Passions

What activities make you lose track of time?

What hobbies do you enjoy?

What topics do you love learning about?

These are all clues to your passions. Make a list of everything you love doing, no matter how big or small.

Step #2 - Determine your Mission

What do you want to accomplish in life?

What kind of impact do you want to make on the world?

What do you want to be remembered for?

Write down your answers to these questions and see if you can identify a common theme.

Ikigai is a Japanese concept that roughly translates to “a reason for being.”

Step #3 - Recognize your Talents

What are you naturally good at?

What skills have you developed over the years?

What do others compliment you on?

Make a list of your talents and skills.

Step #4 - Find your Profession

What careers align with your passions, mission, and talents?

Research different industries and job roles to see what resonates with you. Talk to people who work in those fields to get a better understanding of what the job entails.

Step #5 - Combine Your Passions, Mission, Talents, and Profession.

Now that you have identified your passions, mission, talents, and profession, it is time to combine them to find your ikigai. Look for areas where they overlap and see if you can find a career that allows you to do what you love, make an impact, use your skills, and get paid for it.

On your Way to Finding your Ikigai

Now that you have finished all of the steps, how do you feel? Leave a comment below. How have you incorporated all the other lessons from the other posts in your responses? How have you included your thoughts about your childhood in finding what gets you up in the morning. This is just the first step in truly finding your ikigai. Take the time to review all previous posts and this one. Review your journal. Have a great week and see you next time. Enjoy the process.
